The Plague Cycle: The Unending War Between Humanity and Infectious Disease Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mike Brown -- Enjoyable read about a timely, if frightening subject : This is an easy to devour story of infectious disease and how it is intertwined with society. Kenny confronts the causes and efforts to control pandemics over thousands of years of human history in a very engaging way. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anila Tai -- Highly engaging and compelling narrative on thuman prosperity : This is a fantastic, immersive book that weaves together a historical narrative with a current socio-political take on how plagues manifest in society. While clearly relevant for our current Covid-19 epoch, the book does much more to deepen the understanding of how population growth and progressive urbanization led to cycles of public health challenges which required societal responses (e.g. sanitation) to avoid falling into the plague cycle. The thinking is well-researched and organized to draw insightful linkages. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Giannoula Tziovara -- Great! Readable, informative, passionate and witty : I read through this one much faster than I normally do with non-fiction. Overall the thesis is that pathogenic illnesses and epidemics have had a much greater impact on the development and growth (and sudden 100% negative growth events) of human societies and great civilisations than we think. It's well-structured, convincing, and a great read, with entertaining anecdotes dotted among the statistics. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Washington B. Filho -- Must read. : A carefully written book on plain English, full of good and valid info. Quite actual ( Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Maria A. Lugo -- Fascinating, entertaining, with a big historical sweep : Kenny provides a short, readable account of the role of plagues throughout human history. From the flaws in Malthusianism to the incentive problems posed by vaccine research, the book is full of hard thinking about the interaction between disease and society. Kenny is particularly incisive about the social pathologies that plagues unleash, with clear -- but not overly preachy -- lessons for the current one. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from A M -- The human history as a consequence of plagues : A comprehensive review of the influence of the various infections on human society. I mainly enjoyed the first chapters where the author explains many historical events as a consequence of several plagues. The other chapters include well-known data, and therefore are somewhat disappointing. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Craig Anderson -- A lot of info in 237 pages : Great book. Kept it reasonably simple (for those of us who don't carry microbiology degrees), but well-written and very informative. The history is compelling and fascinating. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from She Treads Softly -- highly recommended overview of the history of infectious diseases : The Plague Cycle: The Unending War Between Humanity and Infectious Disease by Charles Kenny is a highly recommended overview of the history of infectious diseases with some discussion of them in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kaz Yasuda -- Historical accounts of plagues will deepen your perspectives : Historical perspectives reveal that infectious diseases have often resulted in xenophobia and discrimination against women. Lack of knowledge led to fear and violence. Policy makers should learn from this and reflect these in their decision making. Hoarding vaccine and blaming foreigners should be avoided at all costs. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 23, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Maureen Consolati -- Enlightening : An excellent summary of contagious disease through the ages, and a warning for the future. Illustrates the need for humans to review and modify our behaviour and relationship to the natural world. The one large deficit is the authors failure to recognize that reduction of the size of human population is key to our survival as a species and indeed he seems willing to accommodate population growth. ( Reviewed in Canada on February 9, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- how the topic was written : This was an excellent, well written book. I would strongly recommend this book ( Reviewed in Canada on March 8, 2021 )
